(New York) – The Inter-Parliamentary Union, IPU, has begun its 4th International Conference of Speakers of Parliaments at the Permanent Headquarters of the United Nations in New York.
Mohammed Ahmed Al Murr, Speaker of the Federal National Council, FNC, headed the UAE delegation at the three-day conference, taking place within the framework of a series of high-level meetings that precede the UN Summit for the Adoption of Sustainable Development Goals, SDGs, in September.
In his remarks on the occasion, Martin Chungong, Secretary-General of the Inter-Parliamentary Union said that the conference is important to allow the top leaders of parliaments around the world to consider international issues and how to contribute to solving them.
He noted the participation of about 138 Speakers of National Parliaments and 39 Deputies of the Heads of Parliaments from 140 countries at the conference, pointing out that the event will be open to all national parliaments in the world, not only the 166 members of the Inter-Parliamentary Union.
He also said that in addition to the plenary sessions of the IPU Conference, the IPU will hold two events on the goals of sustainable development and how to strengthen the accountability of parliaments across the world on the sidelines of its conference in the UN.
