(Cairo) – The Arab League has issued a statement expressing deep concern about the dramatic escalation of acts of violence and terrorism in Iraq, despite the absence of foreign occupying forces there, calling on all political parties to resort to dialogue to resolve crises and help achieve stability that is reflected on the security of Arab region.
Arab League Deputy Secretary-General, Ambassador Ahmed bin Hilli, said that criminal terrorist operations in Iraq are primarily affecting the innocent Iraqi people there, and regretted the clear violent provocation by some political parties, especially in some areas such as Diyala province, which is described as a kind of ethnic cleansing.
Mr. bin Hilli pointed out that Iraq, which was successful in chairing the 2012 Arab summit and played a prominent role in the Arab arena, has proven capability in restoring security and stability, but in light of recent developments of a series of bombings and criminal acts, it has become clear that there are some parties who seek to push Iraq into “an abyss of destruction”. He reiterated that the Arab League is closely observing current developments, is keen to assist in restoring Iraq’s stability and social unity, and has been contacting all parties there to try to calm the situation.
