Former central banker Mark Carney was sworn in as Canada’s new prime minister on Friday, stepping into leadership during a turbulent period marked by a trade war with the U.S., annexation threats, and an impending federal election. Carney, 59, succeeds Justin Trudeau, who announced his resignation in January but stayed on until the Liberal Party chose a new leader. Carney is widely expected to call a general election in the near future.
