(Brussels) – The Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for International Affairs, Dr. Shaikh Abdullah bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, held official meetings with senior officials of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) during his official working visit to Brussels.
During his visit to NATO headquarters, Dr. Shaikh Abdullah met NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg, where he expressed his pride in the close and growing relations between Bahrain and NATO and their continuous development which is based on a mutual desire to preserve security and prosperity.
The Undersecretary for International Affairs stressed Bahrain’s keenness to strengthen its relations with NATO within the framework of the Istanbul Cooperation Initiative, which the Kingdom joined in 2004, praising the great efforts of NATO in maintaining international peace and security.
He also noted the cooperation between the Kingdom and NATO in combating terrorism, piracy and organised crime.
He noted Bahrain’s joining of the “Individual Partnership and Cooperation Programme” with the Alliance for the period 2016-2018 to promote dialogue and develop effective mechanisms and strategies for joint cooperation.
Dr. Shaikh Abdullah stressed that Bahrain is one of the most effective partners in the fight against terrorism and pointed out to important fields that could be the foundation of constructive cooperation within a new perspective for cooperation capable of setting security priorities.
The Undersecretary for International Affairs praised the international efforts of the Secretary-General and NATO to develop relations with Bahrain and to strengthen cooperation and joint coordination in order to face the upcoming challenges.
NATO Secretary-General valued the role of Bahrain to maintain security and peace in the region and expressed hope for stronger cooperation between the two sides to achieve common interests, wishing Bahrain further progress and prosperity.
The Undersecretary for International Affairs also met NATO Deputy Secretary-General, Rose Gottemoeller. The meeting discussed means of developing cooperation and coordination to face the challenges facing the region in light of regional and international changes, mainly the Iranian interference in the internal affairs of the countries of the region, terrorism and extremism, and terrorism-supporting countries, which require the continuation of political consultations, and the introduction of new ways to deal with crises.
Dr. Shaikh Abdullah stressed Iran’s continued development of its ballistic missiles which poses a direct threat to the region and the vital area of NATO, noting the role of militias and armed networks in threatening regional security.
He said that enhancing political dialogue will contribute to a better understanding of the basic strategic needs and help in capacity building according to an effective security partnership.
He praised the establishment of the Istanbul Cooperation Initiative Regional Centre in Kuwait as an important step in the process of consolidating cooperation.
Nato Deputy Secretary-General praised Bahrain’s role as an active partner in the fight against terrorism and in promoting peace in the region, pointing out that there are many opportunities and prospects for cooperation between the Kingdom and the alliance in the coming period.
The Undersecretary for International Affairs also participated in the NATO Political Committee meeting with the Deputy Assistant Secretary-General of NATO for Political Affairs and Security Policy and members of the Committee, where they discussed mechanisms for developing cooperation between Bahrain and the Alliance, as well as issues of common concern.
Dr. Shaikh Abdullah outlined the developments in the Gulf region and the emerging security challenges and pointed out that Bahrain adopts an open vision of moderate Islam and has a democratic model based on a comprehensive reform approach, led by His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, to consolidate the foundations of the modern civil state.
He indicated that the Kingdom recognizes the importance of comprehensive control of the threat of terrorism, especially that there are countries that support, finance and harbour terrorist groups and cells.
He also stressed the importance of the formation of “the Islamic Military Counter Terrorism Coalition” which was established in response to the growing security challenges and reflects the desire of more than 40 member states to form a unified front against the threats of terrorism.
The Undersecretary for International Affairs stressed that the deterring by the international community of Iran’s hostile practices that violate international law, and stopping the irresponsible Qatari behaviour to destabilize security and stability will be a decisive and necessary step in eliminating terrorism.
