Ursula von der Leyen Re-Elected as EU Commission President
Brussels, Belgium – Ursula von der Leyen was re-elected as President of the European Commission with 401 votes in favor by the European Parliament. This marks her second term, following her initial election in July 2019.
Out of 719 MEPs, the necessary majority was 360 votes. The secret ballot also saw 284 votes against and 22 blank or invalid votes. Von der Leyen outlined her priorities for the next five years ahead of the vote.
The next steps include inviting member states to propose European Commissioner candidates, with nominee hearings to follow. The full college of Commissioners must then be endorsed by Parliament.
