(Washington) – The United Nations (UN) said it had been notified by the US on its intention to withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement, unless it identifies suitable terms for reengagement..

The US State Department, in a press release issued, said: “The United States submitted a communication to the United Nations in its capacity as depositary for the Paris Agreement regarding the US intent to withdraw from the Paris Agreement as soon as it is eligible to do so.”

“As the President indicated in his June 1 announcement and subsequently, he is open to re-engaging in the Paris Agreement if the United States can identify terms that are more favorable to it, its businesses, its workers, its people, and its taxpayers,” the State Department said in its press release about the formal notice of withdrawal to the UN.

“The United States supports a balanced approach to climate policy that lowers emissions while promoting economic growth and ensuring energy security,” the department added in the release.

The State Department stressed in the press release that the United States would continue to participate in UN climate change meetings during the withdrawal process, which is expected to take at least three years.
