Interior Minister chairs Civil Defence Council meeting

(Manama) – His Excellency Interior Minister, Lt-General Shaikh Rashid bin Abdullah Al Khalifa chaired the 10th Civil Defence Council meeting in the presence of Their Excellencies Minister of Electricity, Minister of Works, Municipality Affairs and Urban Planning, Minister of Health, Minister of Industry, Commerce and Tourism, Minister of Information Affairs, Southern Governor and Executive President of the Supreme Council for Environment.
He welcomed the attendees, highlighting the importance of the meeting as part of efforts to ensure the safety and security of the public through coordination and cooperation between public and private organisations.
The council was briefed on steps taken regarding the implementation of the decisions of the last meeting and discussed the topics on the agenda. The Southern Governor informed the meeting on the operations of a committee that was formed on May 5 to protect oil and industrial establishments in the Southern Governorate.
He highlighted the setting up of a comprehensive 5-phase security plan to protect Bahrain oil field and the formation of a civil defence team to deal with emergencies. The governor also discussed a proposal to move the scrape yard away from industrial establishments and residential areas. The council decided to refer the proposal to the Cabinet that includes the transformation of the scrape yard to a waste recycle zone. The Governor also suggested allocating the camping area for the upcoming camping season away from dangerous locations.
The council also decided to form a work team to set a plan for nuclear security in cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency to enhance protection against nuclear threats. Also the meeting discuss the hiring of a specialised company in cooperation with the agency to review the national plan to respond to radiological and nuclear emergency.
HE Interior Minister highlighted importance to enhance civil defence to tackle existing and developing risks and the spreading awareness in dealing with all types of threats, in addition to benefit from the expertise of developed countries and the formation of a national industrial security authority.
At the end of the meeting, HE the Interior Minister expressed thanks and appreciation for the council members for their dedication towards the enhancement of security and safety levels for the public. (MOI)
