(Manama) – The Gulf Petrochemical Industries Company (GPIC) has concluded the 16th session of its Environmental Awareness Lectures Programme (2016-2017), implemented in cooperation with the Ministry of Education. Since the start of the programme, lectures have been delivered at 485 schools and these have benefitted 36,700 students.

This programme is in line with the Company’s policy that give top priority to the protection of the environment and promotes environmental awareness among Bahraini society, in particular school students. A total of 3,600 students of all levels, from 40 public and four private schools, took part in this year’s programme.

GPIC President Dr. Abdulrahman Jawahery cited the company’s efforts to protect the environment and said it is committed to maintaining its balance and rational use. He said these principles have played a leading role in GPIC carrying out its moral and social responsibility towards the environment. He said the company has worked sincerely to sustain its environment and protect it from all threats as a result of the industrial boom. He said GPIC seeks to establish a community environmental culture in which the society participates and contributes effectively to its protection and preservation. He mentioned the company’s environmental initiatives both within and outside the complex. He also mentioned the establishment of several environmental projects set up within GPIC complex. He expressed satisfaction at results of the environmental awareness lectures’ programme, which began in 2001.

Dr. Jawahery praised the support of Minister of Education Dr. Majid Bin Ali Al Nuaimi as well as his following up to make it a success. He congratulated all participants and said GPIC would continue efforts to promote community awareness of the importance of environmental issues and the need to put in place sound environmental practices.

The programme includes visits company engineers make to schools to provide environmental lectures in Arabic and English, during which they focus on the most important environmental topics being discussed at the global level including, but not limited to, the phenomenon of global warming, depletion of the ozone layer and acid rain.

The lectures also address the role of institutions and individuals in supporting and preserving the environment, minimizing the effects of environmental pollution and reducing depletion of natural resources. The lectures help students understand their role in the present and in the future on how to preserve the environment.
