(Manama) – The Kingdom of Bahrain has achieved an unprecedented achievement on the regional level after winning first place overall in the medal table at the Fourth Arab Women’s Sports Tournament, which ended yesterday (Monday) in Sharjah.
Taking home a total of 28 medals – 12 gold, 7 silver and 9 bronze, the nationals topped the overall standings in this 16-nation 12-day tournament. It was the first of its kind achievement since Bahrain has taken part at the first edition tournament in 2012, as Bahrain’s women kicked started this year’s slogan “gold only”, launched by Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al-Khalifa.
Last night’s closing ceremony was attended by Organising Committee chairman Sheikh Khalid bin Ahmed Al-Qasmi and Tournament Supervising and Following Committee chairwoman Shaikha Hayat bint Abdulaziz Al-Khalifa, who honored the winners of the basketball championship.
Sporting Club of Egypt took the trophy, beating Jordan’s Al Fuhais of Jordan 63-61 in the final. Host club Sharjah came third. At the end of the tournament, additional trophies were presented to overall tournament winners Bahrain (12 gold medals), followed by second-placers Egypt (9) and third Algeria (7). The breakthrough trophy went to Sharjah Club, Al Ahli Jeddah of Saudi Arabia won the fair play trophy, while Algeria’s Sport Society Club took the excellence cup.
