Military intervention in Syria disastrous EU(Copenhagen) – European Union (EU) foreign ministers have warned against the temptation of military intervention in Syria despite the growing human suffering, saying boots on the ground could ignite “a large-scale fire”.
Germany’s Guido Westerwelle said, “any talk of military intervention would be counter-productive. We need to avoid a large-scale fire that would have really disastrous consequences for the region, the people, and the world”. He added that it is urgent for the UN Security Council to issue a clear message that “we are on the side of the people in Syria against the violence and the repression.”
Ahead of his visit to Syria, former UN chief and recently appointed special Arab League-UN envoy to Syria, Kofi Annan also spoke out strongly against any foreign arming of the rebels, prompting Washington to echo his concerns about the dangers of further militarisation of the conflict.
